Engines and Performance
Some major performance and capability changes arrive for the new 2020 Explorer. Particularly noteworthy is the shift from the previous generation's front-wheel driver architecture to the new model's rear-wheel drive design. Ford opted for this change in an effort to improve handling and towing capacity.
Several engine choices are available as well, each one yielding different power outputs and towing capacities.
- The base 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine makes 300 horsepower and can tow up to 5,300 pounds.Â
- The 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 engine makes 365 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque in the Explorer Platinum. In the Explorer ST, the engine makes 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque.
